The Nigerian military said on 29 June that senior Islamic State West Africa Province commanders had surrendered to Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East, alongside 76 fighters and some family members.

Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer for the Joint Task Force North East, said the individuals had been moved to a secure facility for profiling and debriefing. The military did not release their names or disclose the locations where they surrendered, citing operational security.

The omission limits independent verification. Without names, ranks or locations, conflict monitors cannot yet cross-check the claim against known ISWAP command structures or assess whether the surrendered figures were senior commanders or lower-level operatives.

The military framed the surrenders as the result of sustained pressure on ISWAP and Boko Haram positions. Operation Hadin Kai said recent operations had disrupted insurgent command, logistics and freedom of movement across the North-East theatre.

The latest surrender claim may indicate attrition inside ISWAP networks, but it does not yet prove strategic defeat. The key indicators to watch are whether attack frequency declines, whether additional commanders surrender, and whether independent monitors can verify the identities and operational importance of those now in Nigerian custody.
