Ukraine is preparing for a possible Russian attack from the north as Moscow continues to strike retail fuel infrastructure across the country.

General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said Kyiv was readying for a potential Russian offensive from Russia’s Bryansk region into Ukraine’s Chernihiv region. An assault on Kyiv is unlikely, he said, but Moscow could open a northern axis to draw Ukrainian forces away from other parts of the front

The warning comes as Russia expands attacks on gas stations across Ukraine. On July 1, Russian strikes hit five retail fuel stations in Dnipropetrovsk region, killing one woman and injuring three others, including a pregnant woman, regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said. Similar attacks were reported in Chernihiv region, while fuel stations in Sumy, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia have also been hit in recent weeks.

The pressure is not limited to Ukraine’s north. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently warned Belarus over relay equipment Kyiv says was helping guide Russian Shahed drones into Ukraine. He later said the equipment had stopped transmitting, citing Ukraine’s military and intelligence services.

Together, the northern warning and strikes on fuel infrastructure point to a wider Russian effort to stretch Ukraine beyond the main battlefield: forcing Kyiv to defend border regions, protect civilian infrastructure and manage pressure on logistics at the same time.
